Unlike the average person I was the ideal candidate when it came to selling the idea of clean beauty. Since I had been living a nontoxic lifestyle for nearly 5 years making the switch to safer beauty products was organic. The key to clean beauty is to start small. Find how the products you invest in can benefit you. If you are someone newly curious about nontoxic beauty; splurging on an entire new collection may not necessarily be right for you.
When I was introduced to nontoxic products I thought I needed to buy everything. The fact is I use some products more than others and could have started small and worked my way up. There are lots of products on the market however that doesn’t mean you need them all. The easiest way to invest in the right products is to start with what you are currently using the most. For me that was everything: Shampoo and conditioner, body wash, lotion, sunscreen, makeup and skincare. You may not use as many products as I use and probably have different needs for your skin. I suggest identifying the 2-3 products you use most and can’t live without. If I had to choose 3 it would be face wash, moisturizer and body cream. Those are the products I use daily, and more often than not, multiple times a day.
I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I discovered Beautycounter so I went overboard. I ordered one of everything: An entire new makeup collection, body collection and multiple skincare sets. Working as a beauty editor has its perks like sampling different products from brands for free. But I chose to experiment with Beautycounter so it was my choice to invest wisely. I did what any enthusiast would do, I ordered it all. In order to identify what works best for you I had to try it for myself. That’s when I concluded not every product is for everyone. That’s also when I dedicated myself to Beautycounter and becoming a consultant. I wanted to urge people to use safer products so that I could educate and help protect them.
Once you narrow down your top 2-3 must-have products start there. Slowly incorporate these into your daily routine and add more as needed. You get more bang for your buck with Beautycounter because the value of the products last twice sometimes three times as long as drug store and luxury brands. The higher concentration allows you to use less so your dollar goes further. Knowing the ingredients in your products is crucial to understanding why you spend more upfront. If you are new to safe beauty it’s valuable to understand how removing toxic ingredients effects you differently. Beautycounter hand sources every ingredient and never uses mass produced ingredients to protect you. The health effects of chemical exposure from day-to-day products is scary. This informative podcast on Goop Presents Beauty Closet with Nneka Leiba, the vice president of healthy living science at the Environmental Working Group (EWG), goes into greater detail.
